It doesn’t matter if you’re taking a road trip across the country with your family or driving home alone after a long day at work, there’s always the risk of falling asleep at the wheel.

With this having the potential to cause an accident that results in serious injury or death, it’s critical that you take steps to protect yourself. Here are some of the best ways to remain alert when behind the wheel:

  • Keep your window open: Even if it’s a bit cool outside, keep your window open to let fresh air circulate through your vehicle. When combined with the noise, it can help you stay alert.
  • Take a drink: From coffee to an energy drink, there are many beverages that are meant to keep you alert. If you have any reason to believe you could become tired while driving, plan in advance by having one of these beverages available.
  • Turn up the music: It should not be so loud that it distracts you. Just loud enough that it keeps you alert until you reach your destination.

Along with the above, should you realize you’re becoming drowsy, immediately pull to the side of the road to plot out your next move.

Finally, keep in mind that you’re not the only person on the road. So, even if you’re 100% alert and paying attention, another driver could be dozing off.

If you’re injured in an accident caused by a drowsy driver, call for help and turn your immediate attention to your health. This will position you to file an insurance claim and take other actions to hold the negligent party responsible for all your damages.
